The 6G-REFERENCE Partners Meet at the First General Assembly and Face-to-face Kick-off Meeting to Discuss the Project Research Objectives

The 6G-REFERENCE project hosted its First General Assembly and Face-to-Face Kick-Off Meeting on the 24th and 25th of April, 2024, in the Spanish city of Castelldefels.

The two days event started with a networking breakfast on the 24th in which partners could meet in person for the first time in our coordinator’s Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) facilities in Castelldefels, near Barcelona. Our coordinator, Ignacio Llamas, introduced the meeting, remarking its objective: to advance on the 6G-REFERENCE project research goals and to discuss some technical aspects.

Then, partners focused on 6G-REFERENCE D-MIMO and Over-The-Air Synchronization, including deployment examples, frequency bands and sub-aspects, transmission schemes and processing, and standardization – MIMO evolution. This session was followed up by partners contributions summarizing the status of each of their work packages, to keep advancing on the project KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) and objectives.

Timing, Sensing and Communication Working Groups

After a productive morning of partners presentations to advance on our research goals, in the afternoon session the 6G-REFERENCE partners were divided in three working groups to discuss about each of them in detail:

  1. Timing.
  2. Sensing.
  3. Communication.

They defined together some KPIs and research questions related to each hardware enablers, since 6G-REFERENCE will deploy practical hardware enablers in terms of low complexity, cost and power consumption that could end up constituting a reference design for future 6G-distributed radios. The working groups dynamic finished with all the partners gathered again to share the outcomes of the three sub-sessions.

During the second day, on the 25th, our partners continued their discussions to steer the global direction of the project, clarifying our priorities and project planning. A summary of the previous day three working group sessions (timing, sensing and communications) was presented to take some decisions regarding the System KPIs and research questions.

Our coordinator Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), spoke about the 6G-REFERENCE project consortium bodies, coordination, review and in-person meetings to monitor the technical progress of 6G-REFERENCE.

To finish the meeting, AUSTRALO, leader of the Work Package 5 ‘Ecosystem Building, Outreach and Exploitation’, shared with the rest of the partners the Communication and Dissemination Guidelines, right before jumping into interviewing them -stay tuned to our LinkedIn and X to watch their interviews soon.

Together, we will equip urban areas with sustainable solutions that can cope with the ever-increasing traffic demands and population densification, while providing disruptive capabilities like the materialization of the internet of sense.
