The 6G-REFERENCE consortium came together in person for a meeting hosted and organised by project partner Ericsson in Lund, Sweden, on 22 and 23 September 2026. The agenda focused on advancing the project’s demonstrations and discussing how its results can have a lasting impact, particularly through communication, dissemination and exploitation activities, as the project enters its final months.
This is the sixth time that the team meets face-to-face since the project launch in January 2024.
The 6G-REFERENCE Demo Cases: 6G Research in Communications, ISAC and Synchronisation
Discussions in Lund centred around the project’s demo cases. 6G-REFERENCE aims to develop centimetre-wave integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) solutions capable of serving many users per area through a dense network of cell-free distributed radio units.
We are developing three demos covering Communications, ISAC and Synchronisation test cases in factory-hall and urban-square scenarios:
- Low-Latency Communications Leveraging Full Duplex: exploring how full-duplex communication can support highly responsive wireless connectivity.
- Integrated Sensing and Communication: Passive vs Active Sensing: investigating different approaches to sensing while simultaneously supporting communications.
- Over-the-Air Accurate Frequency and Time Synchronisation: demonstrating precise synchronisation techniques for distributed wireless systems.
The general assembly provided an opportunity to review progress, coordinate the next steps and ensure that the demonstrations effectively showcase the capabilities developed within 6G-REFERENCE.
Connecting the Past, Present and Future of Wireless Technology
Lund also provided a fitting setting for a project focused on the future of 6G and wireless connectivity.
Did you know that Ericsson built a modern rune stone in Lund to mark the birthplace of Bluetooth? That is the stone you can see with the 6G-REFERENCE partners in the picture of this article. Bluetooth is one of the technologies that helped shape the era of wireless connectivity, and it was named after the Danish king Harald Bluetooth, who was known for uniting Denmark and Norway during the 10th century.
Harald Bluetooth brought different tribes together, an inspiration for a technology designed to connect different devices and, ultimately, different people. Today, 6G-REFERENCE is continuing that tradition of connection in a new technological era, bringing together researchers, industry partners and technologies to explore the possibilities of 6G.
A special thank you goes to Ericsson team members Stefan Andersson and Pallawi Palawi for helping make this face-to-face meeting possible!
